Category: General,
Your air conditioner has had quite a summer.
For months, it’s been battling Virginia heat, humidity, long afternoons, hot attics, open doors, summer gatherings, and all those times someone in the house decided 68 degrees sounded perfectly reasonable.
Now September is here.
Does that mean your AC can officially clock out for the year?
Not quite.
Hampton Roads isn’t exactly known for flipping a switch from summer to fall. We can have an 85-degree afternoon followed by an evening that suddenly has you wondering where you put your sweatshirt.
But September is a great time to check in on your HVAC system after everything you’ve asked it to do this summer.
At One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning, we believe the more you know about your home comfort system, the better. So before we start thinking about cooler weather, let’s give the hardest-working appliance in your house a little attention.

Start With the Air Filter
We know.
The air filter. Again.
If you’ve been following our blogs, you’re probably starting to think we have some sort of contractual obligation to mention air filters in every article.
We don’t.
They’re just really important.
After months of heavy summer operation, your filter may have collected plenty of dust, pollen, pet hair, and other airborne particles. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and make your HVAC system work harder than necessary.
Take a look at it. If it’s dirty, replace it.
There. We said it.
Again.
And we’ll probably say it next month too.
Take a Look at Your Outdoor Unit
Your outdoor condenser has spent the summer sitting through heat, thunderstorms, grass clippings, leaves, dirt, and whatever else your yard has thrown at it.
Take a quick walk outside and look around the unit.
Make sure it isn’t surrounded by:
- Tall grass
- Weeds
- Leaves
- Mulch
- Branches
- Yard debris
Your outdoor unit needs room to breathe so it can release heat effectively.
You don’t need to dismantle anything or perform your own HVAC surgery. Just keeping the area around the unit clean and clear can help.
Pay Attention to How Your System Is Running
Remember our July conversation about AC systems running all day?
During extreme summer heat, long run times can be completely normal.
September gives you a different opportunity.
As outdoor temperatures begin to moderate, pay attention to whether your system seems to be getting a break too.
Is it still running constantly on relatively mild days?
Is it taking much longer to cool the house than it used to?
Are certain rooms suddenly harder to keep comfortable?
Has the airflow from your vents changed?
Your HVAC system spent the summer under its heaviest workload. If something feels different now, don’t automatically assume it’s just because the system is tired.
Your house may be giving you a clue that something needs attention.
Listen for New Sounds
HVAC systems aren’t completely silent. You know the normal hums, clicks, and airflow sounds your system makes.
What we’re talking about are the new sounds.
Rattling.
Grinding.
Squealing.
Buzzing.
Banging.
Basically, if your HVAC system suddenly sounds like it’s trying out for a percussion section, we’d like to hear about it.
New noises can sometimes indicate loose components, worn parts, airflow issues, or other problems that should be inspected before they become larger repairs.
Check Around the Indoor Unit
You don’t need to open anything up. This is simply a visual inspection.
Look around your indoor HVAC equipment for anything unusual, particularly signs of moisture or water.
Your air conditioner removes a tremendous amount of humidity from your home during the summer, and that moisture has to drain somewhere.
If you notice water where it shouldn’t be, staining, persistent dampness, or anything else that looks unusual, it’s worth having it checked.
Think About Your Energy Bills
Summer electric bills are usually higher. That’s not exactly breaking news.
Your AC is running more, outdoor temperatures are higher, and your home is fighting heat and humidity for months.
But look at the bigger picture.
Did this summer’s bills seem dramatically higher than last year’s under similar conditions?
Did your energy usage climb even though your habits didn’t change much?
Did your system seem to run longer without making the house noticeably more comfortable?
One high bill doesn’t necessarily mean there’s an HVAC problem. But a pattern of rising energy use combined with declining comfort can be worth investigating.

Don’t Forget About the Other Half of Your HVAC System
Here’s where September gets interesting.
You’ve spent months thinking about cooling.
Pretty soon, you’ll be asking the same HVAC system to keep you warm.
Before the first chilly night arrives, turn on your heat briefly and make sure it actually works.
You may notice a temporary dusty smell the first time the heat runs after sitting unused for months. That’s often caused by dust that has accumulated during the off-season.
But persistent burning odors, electrical smells, unusual noises, or a heating system that doesn’t seem to be operating correctly shouldn’t be ignored.
It’s much nicer to discover a heating problem on a mild September day than on the first genuinely cold night of the season.
September Is a Great Time for a Tune-Up
Preventive maintenance isn’t just about fixing something that’s already broken.
A professional tune-up gives your technician an opportunity to inspect the system, identify developing problems, check performance, and help make sure your equipment is ready for the season ahead.
And September is a pretty convenient time to do it.
Your AC has already endured most of summer’s toughest conditions, but the winter heating rush hasn’t arrived yet.
Think of it as your HVAC system’s annual physical.
Except your HVAC system won’t complain about the paper gown.

Comfort Club Makes Staying Ahead of Maintenance Easier
If remembering HVAC maintenance isn’t exactly at the top of your personal hobby list, we understand.
That’s one of the reasons we offer our Comfort Club membership.
Comfort Club members receive annual maintenance along with benefits including priority service, free filters, up to 30% off repairs, and savings on new systems.
More importantly, regular maintenance gives us the opportunity to get to know your system over time and help you stay ahead of potential problems.
That’s what being your home comfort partner is all about.
The Bottom Line
Your HVAC system has worked hard this summer.
September is a great time to return the favor.
Change the filter. Clear around the outdoor unit. Pay attention to unusual sounds, airflow, moisture, and changes in performance. And before cooler weather arrives, make sure your heat is ready to go.
You don’t have to become an HVAC expert.
That’s our job.
But understanding the basics of how your system is performing can help you spot changes early, make informed decisions, and avoid unpleasant surprises.
At One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning, we’d much rather help you keep your system running smoothly than meet you for the first time when something stops working on the hottest or coldest day of the year.
So enjoy those September days when your AC finally gets to take the occasional break.
It earned it.
