Your Summer Cooling Guide: How to Stay Comfortable Without Overworking Your AC

Category: General,

If you’ve spent any time reading our blogs, following us on social media, or chatting with one of our technicians, you’ve probably noticed something.

We like to share tips.

A lot of tips.

That’s because at One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning, we don’t just want to be the company you call when something goes wrong. We want to be your partner in keeping your home comfortable all year long. We believe the more you know about your home comfort system, the better equipped you’ll be to keep it running efficiently, avoid unnecessary repairs, and make informed decisions when something doesn’t seem quite right.

Simply put, the more you know, the better.

Now, we also realize some of these tips may sound familiar.

“Didn’t you already tell me to change my air filter?”

Yes.

“Didn’t you already remind me to keep my vents open?”

Also yes.

“And haven’t you mentioned clearing around my outdoor unit about…oh…twenty-seven times?”

Okay, maybe not that many. But close.

There’s a reason we keep coming back to these simple maintenance habits. They’re easy, they’re safe for homeowners, and they genuinely make a difference. Think of them as the HVAC equivalent of eating your vegetables or remembering to change the oil in your car. They aren’t exciting, but you’ll be glad you did them.

So, with summer temperatures climbing and your air conditioner entering its busiest season of the year, here are some of our favorite ways to help your home stay cooler while giving your AC a little helping hand.

1. Keep the Sun Outside Where It Belongs

Your air conditioner has one job: remove heat from your home.

The less heat that gets inside in the first place, the easier that job becomes.

During the hottest part of the day:

  • Close blinds or curtains on sunny windows.
  • Use blackout curtains in rooms that receive strong afternoon sun.
  • Keep shades closed while you’re away.

It’s one of the simplest ways to help your home stay cooler without asking your air conditioner to work overtime.

2. Yes…We’re Going to Talk About Your Air Filter Again

We know.

You’ve heard this one before.

You’ll probably hear it again.

And there’s a very good reason for that.

A dirty air filter restricts airflow, forcing your HVAC system to work harder than it should. That means longer run times, reduced efficiency, and more wear on the equipment.

A clean filter helps:

  • Improve airflow
  • Reduce strain on the system
  • Improve indoor air quality
  • Help your home cool more efficiently

It’s a five-minute task that can pay off all summer long.

If you’re a Comfort Club member, don’t forget that your membership includes free air filters, making it even easier to stay on schedule.

3. Resist the Thermostat Olympics

We’ve all done it.

You walk into a warm house and immediately march over to the thermostat like you’re negotiating with it.

“If I set it to 65 degrees, surely it’ll cool faster…”

Unfortunately, thermostats don’t respond to wishful thinking.

Your air conditioner cools your home at the same rate regardless of whether it’s set to 72 or 65. Setting it dramatically lower simply means the system will keep running longer trying to reach that temperature.

Find a comfortable setting and let your system do what it was designed to do.

4. Let Your Ceiling Fans Join the Team

Your air conditioner doesn’t have to do all the work.

Ceiling fans create a wind-chill effect that helps you feel cooler, even though they don’t actually lower the room’s temperature.

During the summer, make sure your ceiling fans rotate counterclockwise to push cool air downward.

And remember, fans cool people, not empty rooms. If no one’s in the room, turn the fan off and let it enjoy a little break too.

5. We’re Going to Mention Your Vents Again…Because They’re Important

See? We warned you.

Keeping supply and return vents open is one of those little things that’s easy to overlook.

A couch, an oversized chair, a decorative basket, or even a curtain can partially block airflow without you realizing it.

When airflow is restricted, your system has to work harder to deliver the same comfort throughout your home.

Sometimes solving a comfort issue is as simple as moving a piece of furniture a few inches.

Not glamorous.

Very effective.

6. Try Not to Heat Up the House

Your air conditioner already has enough on its plate.

Whenever possible:

  • Grill outside instead of using the oven.
  • Run the dishwasher after sunset.
  • Do laundry during the evening.
  • Turn off lights and electronics you’re not using.

Every little bit of extra indoor heat is something your AC has to remove.

7. One More Time…Clear Around Your Outdoor Unit

We promised we’d keep sharing the simple things because they work.

Your outdoor condenser needs room to breathe.

Leaves, weeds, tall grass, overgrown shrubs, and yard debris can reduce airflow around the unit, making it less efficient.

Aim to keep about two feet of clear space around the condenser.

It’s one of the easiest ways to help your air conditioner keep its cool.

8. Don’t Forget About Humidity

Sometimes your house isn’t necessarily hot.

It just feels…sticky.

That’s because comfort isn’t only about temperature. Humidity plays a huge role in how your home feels.

If your home feels muggy even though the thermostat says 74 degrees, your system may not be removing moisture as effectively as it should.

It’s worth having the system evaluated before those humid July afternoons become even more uncomfortable.

9. Know When It’s Time to Call in the Pros

Even well-maintained systems occasionally need a little help.

If you notice:

  • Warm air coming from the vents
  • Weak airflow
  • Strange noises
  • Higher energy bills
  • Uneven temperatures
  • Constant running without reaching the thermostat setting

it’s a good idea to schedule a professional evaluation before a small issue grows into a larger repair.
